HOW IS CBD OBTAINED?
There are a number of ways of extracting CBD from Cannabis, and they will usually vary according to the THC content, which can be separated from the extract.
The three main extraction methods for CBD are carbon dioxide extraction, steam distillation, and solvent extraction, and the extracts are made from the flowers, leaves, and stalks of the plant.
You will probably find the terms full or broad spectrum and isolate when searching for CBD. Although none of these terms are legally regulated, their meaning is:
-
CBD isolate: The purest form of CBD, mainly extracted from Hemp, due to its low concentration of THC. The isolate is produced by removing all other compounds found in the plant including other cannabinoids isolating the CBD.
-
Full spectrum CBD – or whole plant CBD: This extract contains the whole range of compounds naturally occurring in the plant, including essential oils and other cannabinoids. THC can be present in full spectrum CBD at trace amounts, with concentrations up to 0.3%.
-
Broad spectrum CBD: This extract contains the whole range of compounds naturally occurring in the plant, like in the full spectrum, however, the THC is completely removed.
